Fishing

Salmon Fishing on the River Nith:

The river nith is one of Scotlands premier salmon rivers, it also has one of the longest seasons in Scotland, opening on march 15th and closing on november 30th. It is usually april or may before there is a decent chance of catching one though.

There are usually large numbers of salmon in late september and october and then during november, larger fish are on their way upstream. The river is well known for its grey backs, large silver back-end fish. Sea trout are present in decent numbers from around the start of may and it is usually possible to catch them in june and july and even in august.

Outside of the salmon season there is good grayling and trout fishing to be had on the river. The upper Nithsdale angling association has the rights to the water and permits to fish are readily available at a very reasonable price.

The assocoiation has 11 miles of double bank fishing with over 50 named pools. Why not visit www.rivernithfishings.co.uk for more info. Other private fishing beats not far from Sanquhar - visit www.ryehill-farm.co.uk for more info.
